A Situation Analysis of Education in Fifteen Chiefdoms in the Northern Region of Sierra Leone
Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR), Sierra Leone
Project Overview
This project examines the educational landscape in 15 chiefdoms in Sierra Leone's Northern Region, with a specific focus on the challenges facing girl child education. It highlights key issues such as enrolment trends, gender parity, teacher capacity, school infrastructure, and socio-cultural factors impeding girls' access to education. The study also provides critical baseline data to guide the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR) in shaping future educational interventions in these regions. Key findings include: • Disproportionately low female teacher representation. • Barriers such as early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and financial constraints. • Community schools’ growing role in providing access to education. • A significant gender gap in enrolment and transition rates, especially at the junior secondary level.
