Assessment of Micro-Credit Institution(s) for a Cooperative Partnership with the Sierra Leone Labour Congress
Project Overview
This study, commissioned by the Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC), assessed the viability of potential micro-credit institutions for a cooperative partnership to provide microcredit facilities to SLLC’s members, most of whom are engaged in the informal sector. The study evaluated existing micro-credit infrastructure in Sierra Leone, conditions for accessing credit, and the feasibility of organizing members into cooperatives for better loan access.
Interviews were conducted with three key microcredit institutions — UTB, EcoBank, and First International Bank — to assess their readiness for cooperation with SLLC. Key findings indicated potential for cooperation, particularly if SLLC could organise its members into cohesive groups. Recommendations called for structured cooperative loan schemes and active SLLC engagement in member organization to enhance creditworthiness.
